Galle: Where History Meets the Indian Ocean
Galle is southern Sri Lanka's crown jewel. The 17th-century Dutch Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — sits on a rocky headland surrounded by the sea, its cobblestone streets lined with boutique shops, cafes, and beautifully restored colonial buildings. Beyond the fort walls, the southern coastline stretches east through some of the island's most popular beach towns.
Whether you're here for two nights or two weeks, choosing the right area makes all the difference.
1. Galle Fort — Heritage Luxury
Best for: Couples, history lovers, photographers, honeymooners
Inside the fort walls is one of Sri Lanka's most atmospheric places to sleep. Colonial-era buildings have been converted into boutique hotels and guest houses, many with rooftop terraces overlooking the ocean. The sunset from the fort ramparts is legendary.
What to expect:
- Beautifully restored rooms with period features — high ceilings, antique furniture, polished concrete floors
- Walkable to everything inside the fort: cafes, galleries, the lighthouse, the maritime museum
- Quiet at night once the day-trippers leave
- Premium pricing compared to areas outside the fort
Price range: LKR 8,000–25,000/night for a double room. A handful of ultra-luxury properties exceed LKR 50,000.
Drawback: No beach access directly from the fort (the closest swimming spot is a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride).
2. Unawatuna — The Classic Beach Stay
Best for: Beach lovers, families, backpackers, first-time visitors to the south coast
Just 5 km east of Galle Fort, Unawatuna is a crescent-shaped bay with calm, swimmable water protected by a reef. It's the most developed beach town in the Galle district, with a wide range of accommodation from LKR 2,000 dorms to mid-range boutique stays.
What to expect:
- Walking distance to the beach from almost every property
- Plenty of restaurants, bars, and dive shops along the beachfront road
- Can feel crowded during peak season (December–March)
- Good snorkelling directly off the beach
Price range: LKR 2,500–12,000/night. Budget guest houses start from LKR 3,000 for a private double room with fan.
Pro tip: Properties on the hillside behind the beach offer better views, quieter surroundings, and lower prices than beachfront places.
3. Habaraduwa & Koggala — Quiet Coastal Living
Best for: Long stays, digital nomads, families wanting peace and quiet
Between Unawatuna and Ahangama, this stretch of coast offers a more local, less touristy experience. Koggala is home to the famous stilt fishermen and a beautiful lake that can be explored by boat.
What to expect:
- Larger properties with gardens and pools at lower prices than Unawatuna
- Quieter beaches — often you'll have long stretches to yourself
- Fewer restaurants within walking distance (a tuk-tuk to Unawatuna costs LKR 300–500)
- Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum and Koggala Lake nearby
Price range: LKR 3,500–10,000/night for guest houses and small hotels.
4. Ahangama & Midigama — The Surf Strip
Best for: Surfers, yoga enthusiasts, the boho-traveller crowd
South of Koggala, Ahangama and Midigama have become the south coast's surf hub. The waves here are consistent from November to April, and the area has developed a laid-back community of surf camps, yoga shalas, and plant-based cafes.
What to expect:
- Surf-and-stay packages from LKR 5,000–8,000/night including board rental
- Relaxed, community atmosphere
- Accommodation ranges from basic surf shacks to stylish boutique villas
- Beach is rockier than Unawatuna — better for surfing than swimming
Price range: LKR 2,500–8,000/night. Surf camps with lessons start from LKR 6,000/night.
