Sinharaja Morningside: The Misty Eastern Rainforest

Where Sinharaja Climbs into the Clouds

Most visitors know Sinharaja from its steamy lowland entrances, but the reserve's eastern edge rises into cooler, sub-montane cloud forest — and this is Morningside. Reached from the Rakwana hills, it offers a strikingly different face of the rainforest: misty, mossy, and home to species you won't easily find lower down.

A Hotspot for Rare Endemics

Morningside's higher elevation and damp, cloudy climate make it a haven for specialised wildlife:

  • Rare endemic amphibians, including tiny shrub frogs found nowhere else
  • Endemic birds and reptiles, some with very small ranges
  • Purple-faced langurs and the highland atmosphere of dripping, moss-laden trees
  • Beautiful streams and small waterfalls

For naturalists and herpetologists especially, Morningside is one of the most exciting corners of the whole Sinharaja landscape.

Visiting

Access is via rough hill roads, and the area is remote, so a local guide and suitable transport are important. The weather is cooler and wetter than the lowlands — mist can settle quickly.

Practical Tips

  • Best time: Drier windows (January–April); mornings before heavy cloud.
  • Layers: It's cool and damp — bring warm, waterproof clothing.
  • Leeches: Common — wear leech socks.

Where to Stay

The usual approach is from the Rakwana / Ratnapura hill country side. See our rainforest accommodation guide for nearby lodges.
