A Jungle Falls With a Secret Cave
Sera Ella is a scenic waterfall on the fringe of the Knuckles Mountain Range, near Rangala and Hunnasgiriya in the Kandy/Matale highlands. Less crowded than the roadside giants, it's a favourite of those who like a short jungle walk — and it hides a small cave behind the cascade, adding to its sense of adventure.
What to Expect
- A pretty, forest-framed waterfall in two main drops
- A footpath through the jungle to reach the base
- A legendary cave behind/near the falls, tied to local folklore
- The cool, misty atmosphere of the Knuckles foothills
Getting There & Tips
- Reached via the Rangala/Knuckles approach from Kandy.
- The trail can be steep and slippery — wear proper shoes.
- A local guide helps with the path and is wise in the Knuckles, where weather changes fast.
- Watch for leeches after rain.
Best Time to Visit
Sera Ella flows best after the rains but the trail is easier in the drier months (January–April). Mornings are clearest.
