A Waterfall Steeped in Legend
Ravana Falls is one of Sri Lanka's most visited cascades, spilling about 25 metres over broad rocks right beside the road near Ella. Its fame comes partly from its easy access and partly from legend: according to the Ramayana, King Ravana is said to have hidden Princess Sita in caves nearby, and the falls bear his name.
What to Do
- Roadside viewing: The falls are visible right from the road, with parking and vendors.
- Swimming: When flow is gentle, small pools at the base are popular for a dip (use caution).
- Ravana Cave: A nearby cave linked to the legend sits high on the hillside — a steep climb with views.
Best Time to Visit
The falls swell impressively during and after the rains (it can become a wide, fan-shaped torrent), while the drier months are calmer and safer for paddling. Visit early to beat the tour-bus crowds.
Safety
- The rocks are very slippery; people have been swept away after heavy rain.
- Don't swim when the water is high or fast — admire from the bank instead.
