A Perfect Pool in the Hills of Belihuloya

Pahanthudawa Falls is a small but enchanting waterfall near Belihuloya, on the scenic boundary between the wet and dry zones. It's named for the deep, almost perfectly round natural pool at its base, said to resemble the flame-tip of a traditional oil lamp (pahana). The cool, clear pool makes it a favourite spot for a refreshing dip.

What to Expect

  • A modest, pretty cascade feeding a striking circular pool
  • A relatively short walk through grassland and scrub to reach it
  • Beautiful Belihuloya scenery — rolling hills and clear streams
  • A popular swimming spot when the water is calm

Getting There & Tips

  • Reached on a footpath from the Belihuloya area.
  • Wear shoes with grip; rocks around the pool are slippery.
  • Swim only when the flow is gentle and water levels are safe.

Best Time to Visit

The falls and pool are at their best in the drier months, when the water is clear and calmer for swimming. After heavy rain the flow strengthens — admire from the bank instead.
