A Highland-Style Falls in the Gem Country
Kirindi Ella is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Ratnapura district, dropping around 116 metres in graceful tiers through forested slopes near Pelmadulla. Set in the lush, rainy southwest hills rather than the high tea country, it combines impressive height with rich green surroundings.
What to Expect
- A tall, multi-tier cascade tumbling down rock ledges
- A footpath leading toward the base through greenery
- A quieter, more local atmosphere than the famous roadside falls
- Warm, humid wet-zone scenery
Getting There & Tips
- Reached via the Pelmadulla area in the Ratnapura district.
- The path to the base can be steep and slippery — wear good shoes.
- A local guide helps, as signage is limited.
- Watch for leeches after rain.
Best Time to Visit
Kirindi Ella is powerful after the rains, while the drier months make the approach safer. As always, go in the morning for the best light and footing.
