Hikkaduwa: Sri Lanka's Original Beach Town

Before Mirissa was on the map and Arugam Bay was accessible, there was Hikkaduwa. This stretch of south coast was Sri Lanka's first proper beach tourism destination, drawing European backpackers in the 1970s and building a reputation for coral reefs, cheap eats, and late-night beach parties that endures today.

Hikkaduwa is louder and more developed than its southern neighbours — but that's part of its charm. The main road buzzes with restaurants, surf shops, jewellery stalls, and dive centres. Sea turtles swim into the shallow reef right off the beach. And when the sun goes down, the beach bars crank up music that carries on well past midnight.

1. Hikkaduwa Beach & Coral Sanctuary — Reef Central

Best for: Snorkellers, families, those wanting beach + nightlife

The northern end of Hikkaduwa beach, around the coral sanctuary area, is the most popular stretch. A protected reef sits just offshore, and sea turtles regularly swim in the shallows — you can often spot them from the beach. Glass-bottom boat operators wait at the waterline.

What to expect:

  • The most lively section of Hikkaduwa with the highest concentration of restaurants and bars
  • Snorkelling directly from the beach — no boat needed
  • Sea turtles feeding in the shallows (especially morning and late afternoon)
  • Can be noisy at night during peak season

Price range: LKR 2,500–10,000/night. Budget rooms from LKR 3,000 with fan; air-con rooms from LKR 5,000.

Pro tip: The coral sanctuary has suffered from tourism damage over the years. Use reef-safe sunscreen, don't touch or stand on coral, and avoid feeding the turtles — they come naturally.

2. Narigama Beach — The Surf End

Best for: Surfers, yogis, travellers wanting a slightly quieter vibe

The southern stretch of Hikkaduwa, Narigama, has a wider beach and better surf than the coral sanctuary area. The vibe here is more laid-back, with surf shops, yoga studios, and a few live-music bars replacing the louder party scene of the north.

What to expect:

  • Better surf than the main Hikkaduwa beach — consistent waves November to April
  • Slightly quieter and more spread out than the coral sanctuary area
  • Good mix of budget and mid-range accommodation
  • Walkable to the main Hikkaduwa strip (15 minutes) or a LKR 200 tuk-tuk ride

Price range: LKR 2,000–8,000/night. Surf camp packages from LKR 4,000 with board rental.

3. Thiranagama & Dodanduwa — Local and Affordable

Best for: Budget travellers, long stays, those wanting to experience local life

South of Narigama, the coastal villages of Thiranagama and Dodanduwa are less touristy and more residential. Accommodation is cheaper and the pace is slower. Dodanduwa has a beautiful inland lake with a small island temple.

What to expect:

  • Quiet, residential atmosphere with local shops and small restaurants
  • Significantly cheaper than central Hikkaduwa
  • A tuk-tuk to the main beach costs LKR 300–500
  • Some guest houses have direct beach access on quieter stretches of sand

Price range: LKR 1,500–5,000/night. Monthly rates available from LKR 30,000.

4. Hikkaduwa Town Centre — Practical Base

Best for: Budget travellers, those arriving by public transport, short stays

The actual town of Hikkaduwa is slightly inland from the beach strip. The train station, bus stops, banks, and the local market are here. It's not where you go for the beach atmosphere, but it's practical and affordable.

What to expect:

  • Cheapest accommodation in the area
  • Walking distance to the beach (5–10 minutes)
  • Better value restaurants on the main road
  • The town market is good for fresh fruit and snacks

Price range: LKR 1,500–4,000/night.

Things to Do in Hikkaduwa

  • Snorkelling at the coral sanctuary: Free access from the beach. Best visibility December–March. Reef-safe sunscreen only.
  • Turtle watching: Sea turtles swim in the shallows daily. Best spotted early morning or late afternoon near the coral sanctuary.
  • Glass-bottom boat rides: See the reef without getting wet. LKR 500–1,000 per person for a 30-minute trip.
  • Surfing: Consistent waves at Narigama and Main Reef. Board rental from LKR 1,000/day; lessons from LKR 3,000.
  • Diving: Several dive centres offer PADI courses and reef/wreck dives. Discover Scuba from LKR 8,000; certified dives from LKR 5,000.
  • Tsunami Museum: Small museum documenting the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami's impact on the area. Free entry, donations welcome.
  • Nightlife: Beach bars along the main strip come alive after dark. Funky de Bar, Sams, and Top Secret are long-standing favourites. No cover charge; beers from LKR 500.
  • Moonstone mines: Visit Meetiyagoda, 8 km inland, to see Sri Lanka's famous moonstones being mined and polished. Free tours at workshops.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Train from Colombo Fort (2 hours, LKR 150 second class) or Galle (30 minutes). Buses from Colombo every 30 minutes (2.5 hours, LKR 200).
  • Getting around: The beach strip is walkable (about 3 km from coral sanctuary to Narigama). Tuk-tuks for longer distances — LKR 100–300 within Hikkaduwa.
  • Best time to visit: November to April for dry weather, calm seas, and the best snorkelling visibility. The surf season also peaks in this period.
  • Budget tip: Eat on the inland side of the main road — restaurants there are significantly cheaper than beachfront places for identical food.
  • Safety: Strong currents can develop, especially at Narigama. Swim where you see locals swimming. The coral sanctuary area is generally safer due to the reef break.
