Diyaluma Falls: Sri Lanka's Second-Highest Waterfall & Infinity Pools

A Curtain of Water — and Pools in the Sky

Diyaluma Falls is the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, cascading around 220 metres down a cliff near Koslanda, between Ella and Wellawaya. While the view from the road below is beautiful, Diyaluma's real fame comes from the natural "infinity pools" at the top — a series of rock pools where you can swim right at the edge of the drop, with the highlands spread out beneath you.

Two Ways to Experience It

  • Lower falls (roadside): Pull over on the A4 for a classic view of the full cascade — easy and quick.
  • Upper pools (hike): A trail of about 45–60 minutes climbs to the top, where the terraced pools and small cascades are.

A Serious Safety Warning

The upper pools are stunning but genuinely dangerous. People have died here. Never swim close to the lip when the water is high or fast, keep well back from the main edge, and don't attempt the hike or pools in wet, slippery conditions. Go with a local guide if unsure.

Best Time to Visit

The drier months (roughly February to May) are safest for the upper pools, with gentler flow. After heavy rain, stay at the roadside viewpoint only.

Where to Stay

Base in Ella or Wellawaya for easy access. See our complete waterfalls guide.
