The Giant of Sri Lankan Waterfalls
Bambarakanda Falls is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka, plunging roughly 263 metres down a sheer rock face in a single dramatic ribbon. Tucked away near Kalupahana, between Haputale and Belihuloya in the Badulla district, it's set against a backdrop of pine forest that gives the area an unexpectedly alpine feel.
What to Expect
- A thin, towering cascade that is most impressive in full flow
- A surrounding pine plantation with walking trails
- A short trek down to the base, where a pool sometimes forms
- Cool highland air and few crowds compared to roadside falls
Best Time to Visit
The falls are at their mightiest during and just after the rains — roughly October to January. In the dry season the flow can shrink to a slender thread, so time your visit if you want the full spectacle. Mornings offer the best light and clearest skies.
Getting There & Tips
- Reached by a side road from the Haputale–Kalupahana area; the final stretch is rough.
- Wear good shoes — the path to the base is steep and slippery.
- Do not climb the wet rocks near the top; there have been serious accidents here.
Where to Stay
Base in Haputale or Belihuloya for easy access, or Badulla for the wider area. See our complete waterfalls guide.
