Arugam Bay: Surf, Stay & Explore Sri Lanka's East Coast

Arugam Bay: Sri Lanka's Surf Capital

On the southeast coast, Arugam Bay is a laid-back crescent of sand that transforms into one of the world's top surf destinations every April. When the south coast monsoon shuts down the western beaches, Arugam Bay's right-hand point break comes alive with consistent, long rides that draw surfers from around the globe.

But A-Bay (as regulars call it) is more than surf. Lagoon safaris with crocodiles and elephants, ancient temple ruins in the surrounding jungle, and a slow-paced beach-village vibe make this a destination worth visiting even if you've never touched a surfboard.

1. Main Point — The Heart of A-Bay

Best for: Surfers, social travellers, those wanting everything within walking distance

The area around the main surf point is where the action concentrates. Guest houses, surf shops, smoothie bars, and restaurants line the sandy road behind the beach. This is where the surf community gathers.

What to expect:

  • Walking distance to the main point break and the beach
  • Wide range of accommodation from basic cabanas to comfortable boutique stays
  • Lively atmosphere — beach parties, live music, and communal dinners
  • Can feel crowded in peak season (July–August)

Price range: LKR 2,500–10,000/night. Simple cabana rooms from LKR 3,000; air-con rooms from LKR 6,000.

2. Beach Road (South of Main Point) — Quiet Beachfront

Best for: Couples, families, those wanting beach proximity without the party scene

Heading south from the main point along the beach road, things get progressively quieter. Several mid-range guest houses and small hotels sit right on or near the beach, offering a more relaxed experience while keeping Main Point within a 10-minute walk or short tuk-tuk ride.

What to expect:

  • Beachfront properties with garden settings
  • Quieter at night — removed from the Main Point bars
  • Good swimming beach (fewer rocks than the point area)
  • Some properties have pools

Price range: LKR 4,000–12,000/night. Beachfront properties from LKR 6,000.

3. Pottuvil — Budget Base

Best for: Budget travellers, those wanting a local town experience

Pottuvil is the actual town serving Arugam Bay — a small, Muslim-majority settlement 3 km north. It has a bus station, market, banks, and ATMs. Budget guest houses here are significantly cheaper than Arugam Bay itself.

What to expect:

  • The cheapest accommodation in the area
  • Real-town facilities: pharmacy, hospital, ATMs
  • A tuk-tuk to the beach costs LKR 200–400
  • Less tourist-focused atmosphere — more authentic local life

Price range: LKR 1,500–4,000/night.

4. Whiskey Point & Peanut Farm — Advanced Surf Spots

Best for: Experienced surfers, travellers wanting seclusion

North and south of Main Point, lesser-known breaks like Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, and Elephant Rock offer less crowded waves for more experienced surfers. A handful of eco-lodges and surf camps have set up near these spots.

What to expect:

  • More powerful waves — not for beginners
  • Basic but characterful accommodation (think bamboo cabanas and open-air bathrooms)
  • Very peaceful — the sound of waves and not much else
  • Own transport helpful (scooter rental from LKR 1,500/day in A-Bay)

Price range: LKR 2,000–7,000/night. Some surf camps offer week-long packages.

The Surf

Season: April to October (peak: June–August)

Best breaks:

Break Level Type Notes
Main Point All levels Right-hand point The iconic wave — long, makeable rides
Baby Point Beginners Gentle shore break Perfect for first-timers
Whiskey Point Intermediate+ Right-hand reef Fast, hollow sections
Peanut Farm Advanced Right-hand point Powerful, less crowded
Elephant Rock Advanced Left and right Remote, reached by tuk-tuk

Surf lessons: LKR 3,000–5,000 for a 2-hour session with board. Most surf shops on the main road offer packages.

Board rental: LKR 1,000–2,000/day depending on board type.

Beyond Surfing

  • Kumana National Park: Bird-watching paradise and elephant sightings. Half-day safari from LKR 8,000 per jeep. Best visited May–September.
  • Lahugala National Park: Small park famous for elephant herds. Entry LKR 2,000. Just 15 km from Pottuvil.
  • Muhudu Maha Viharaya: Ancient Buddhist temple ruins on the coast, linked to a Ramayana legend. Free entry.
  • Pottuvil Lagoon safari: Canoe or boat trip through mangroves — crocodiles, monitor lizards, kingfishers. LKR 2,000–3,000 per person.
  • Cooking classes: Several guest houses offer Sri Lankan cooking classes from LKR 2,500.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Bus from Colombo to Pottuvil (9–10 hours, LKR 600). From Ella, bus via Monaragala (4–5 hours). No train service to this area. Private transfer from Ella (LKR 8,000–10,000).
  • Getting around: Tuk-tuks and scooters. Rent a scooter (LKR 1,500/day) to explore the coastline.
  • Best time to visit: May to September for surf and dry weather. The area is very quiet (many places close) from November to March.
  • Money: Limited ATMs — bring enough cash. The nearest reliable ATM is in Pottuvil.
  • Seasonal closures: Many guest houses and restaurants close during the off-season (November–March). Check ahead if visiting outside peak months.
